Komatsu was first established in 1917 when Takeuchi Mining Industry formed Komatsu Iron Works to manufacture heavy tools and mining equipment for in house use. Komatsu Iron Works separated from Takeuchi in 1921 to become Komatsu Limited and built its first 450-ton sheet-forming press three years later. In 1931, Komatsu manufactured Japan’s first crawler-type farm tractor.
