UHF Radios vs VHF Radios
What is the difference between UHF radios and VHF radios? Which is better for your business?
What is the Right Frequency?
A radio operates by sending and receiving radio signals. A radio signal is a form of energy that moves in waves, just like sound waves. MHz (or megahertz) is a unit of measurement used to measure radio waves, UHF (Ultra High Frequency) and VHF (Very High Frequency) represent the frequency types of radio transmit. The frequency and wavelength differences between the UHF and VHF bands lead to the unique capabilities of these two types.
UHF is a short-range communication frequency band that operates in the 300 MHz-3GHz bands, where radio waves are very compact, operate at higher frequencies, and have strong signal penetration, enabling UHF to communicate through obstacles (e.g. walls, concrete), it is practical in built-up environments, indoors and within urban areas. VHF is radio frequencies in the range between 30-300MHz, which has longer wavelengths and provides a larger broadcast range, it is commonly used in outdoor applications. Understanding the differences between the radio frequencies to decide which one is best for your needs.
Pros and Cons of UHF Radios
UHF antenna is offen shorter and stubby , easier to install, more discrete, and can be handheld.
UHF is good at penetrating walls and concrete at short distances, it works better indoors and in urban areas, so it is often used by public safety, medical personnel, schools, warehouses, and hotels.
Have a wider spectrum and more available channels, so it provides great coverage with little interference from other users.
UHF radio wave is much shorter and has a smaller range, and is suited for communication within a kilometer radius.
Transmission is limited by the visual horizon, radio repeaters are required to transmit over longer distances (e.g., beyond the line of sight).
Because of the higher frequencies, UHF radio requires more power, uses up battery power more quickly, and must be recharged more frequently.
