Pharmaceutical Form Injection (as hydrochloride salt)
Therapeutic Uses Used in the treatment of various types of shock, including septic, cardiogenic, hemorrhagic, and central shock. It is also used in patients with renal insufficiency, decreased cardiac output, and increased peripheral vascular resistance who have received adequate fluid volume replacement.
Mechanism of Action Acts directly on the dopaminergic receptors and also stimulates α- and β2-adrenergic receptors. It increases systolic blood pressure by reducing renal and mesenteric vascular resistance, with minimal change in diastolic blood pressure.
Side Effects May include nausea, vomiting, headaches, and central nervous system stimulation. Large doses may cause tachycardia and arrhythmias.
Precautions Should be used cautiously in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug, pheochromocytoma, hyperthyroidism, or uncorrected tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation.
