Sulbutiamine was developed in Japan as a more efficient version of vitamin B1. vitamin B1 (thiamine) is an essential nootropic vitamin and sulbutiamine mimics the effects of Thiamine at a more drastic level. Sulbutiamine is more efficient than thiamine at crossing the blood brain barrier and therefore much stronger in terms of effects.
