GigabitPassiveOpticalNetworks(GPON)istheleadingtechnologybeingusedinFTTx(FTTH)deployments.PONisdifferentthanotheropticalnetworktopologiesinthatitisaPointtoMulti-Point(P2MP)topology.FromtheCentralOffice’s(CO)OpticalLineTerminal(OLT,withSFPGPONtransceiver/module)asinglestrandoffibergoesouttoapassiveopticalsplitterwhereitssignalismultipliedto64(128)differentlines.TheTransmitandReceivesignalsoperateondifferentwavelengthsallowingbi-directionaloperationoverasinglefiber.AnythingtransmittedfromtheOLTistransmittedtoall32lines.Itisuptothecustomer’ssystem(OpticalNetworkUnit-ONU)todeterminewhatpacketsareforthatcustomer.Allotherpacketsarediscarded.ThePONcurrentstandardshavedefineddownstreamdataratesupto2.5Gbps.
