The Cupping Tester evaluates the formability of sheet metal and the flexibility or adhesion of coatings under deformation. A metal specimen, often coated, is clamped between a die and blank holder, while a spherical or hemispherical punch is pressed into the center to form an indentation. The test continues until either the substrate shows cracking or the coating exhibits failure. The punch depth at first failure, known as the cupping value or Erichsen Index, indicates the material’s or coating’s ability to withstand deformation. The test can be performed manually or automatically, with visual observation or integrated detection systems.
