What Is?
Amentotaxus(Catkin-yew)isagenusofconiferscomprisingfivespecies,treatedineithertheCephalotaxaceae,orintheTaxaceaewhenthatfamilyisconsideredinabroadsense.ThegenusisendemictosubtropicalsoutheasternAsia,fromTaiwanwestacrosssouthernChinatoAssamintheeasternHimalaya,andsouthtoVietnam.Thespeciesareevergreenshrubsandsmalltreesreaching2-15mtall.
Theleavesarespirallyarrangedontheshoots,buttwistedatthebasetolieintwoflatranks(exceptonerectleadingshoots);theyarelinear-lanceolate,4-12cmlongand6-10mmbroad,softintexture,withablunttip,greenabove,andwithtwoconspicuouswhitestomatalbandsbelow.TheydifferfromtherelatedgenusCephalotaxusinthebroaderleaves,andfromTorreyabytheblunt,notspine-tippedleaves.
Thespeciescanbeeithermonoeciousordioecious;whenmonoecious,themaleandfemaleconesareoftenondifferentbranches.Themale(pollen)conesarecatkin-like,3-15cmlong,groupedinclustersof2-6togetherproducedfromasinglebud.Thefemale(seed)conesaresingleorgroupedafewtogetheronshortstems;minuteatfirst,theymatureinabout18monthstoadrupe-likestructurewiththesinglelargenut-likeseed1.5-3cmlongsurroundedbyafleshycovering,orangetoredatfullmaturity;theapexoftheseedusuallyprotrudesslightlyoutofthefleshycovering.
