A thrust ball bearing is a type of thrust bearing that uses steel balls as rolling elements, specifically designed to withstand axial loads (forces along the shaft’s axis). It is suitable for low to medium-speed and light to moderate-load applications. Its primary function is to limit axial displacement between the shaft and the bearing housing while allowing rotational movement, but it provides little to no support for radial loads.

Structure and Types

Basic Structure

Shaft Washer: Fits tightly on the shaft and rotates with it.

Housing Washer: Fixed inside the bearing housing and remains stationary.

Steel Balls and Cage: Steel balls are evenly distributed between the shaft washer and housing washer, while the cage prevents the balls from colliding.

Classification

Single-Direction Thrust Ball Bearing:

Can only withstand axial loads in one direction (e.g., an upward force).

Typical applications: Automotive clutch release bearings, vertical water pumps.

Double-Direction Thrust Ball Bearing:

Designed with two sets of steel balls and three washers to handle axial loads in both directions.

Typical applications: Machine tool spindles, axial positioning in gearboxes.
