FramingisG-PONlikebutusesdifferentwavelengthsfromG-PON(usingaWDMtoseparatethem)sothatG-PONsubscriberscanbeupgradedto10G-PONincrementallywhileGPONuserscontinueontheoriginalOLT.TheG-PONstandardisG.98.ThiscomparestotheIEEE802.3avstandardfor10G-EPONbasedonEthernet,whichhasstandardisedupstreamratesofboth1Gbpsand10Gbps.The10GigabitPONwavelengths(1577nmdown/1270nmup)differfromGPONandEPON(1490nmdown/1310nmup),allowingittocoexistonthesamefibrewitheitheroftheGigabitPONs.
