UsnicacidisanaturallyoccurringdibenzofuranderivativefoundinseverallichenspecieswiththeformulaC18H16O7.ItwasfirstisolatedbyGermanscientistW.Knopin1844[2]andfirstsynthesizedbetween1933-1937byCurdandRobertson.[3]UsnicacidwasidentifiedinmanygeneraoflichensincludingUsnea,Cladonia,Hypotrachyna,Lecanora,Ramalina,Evernia,ParmeliaandAlectoria.Althoughitisgenerallybelievedthatusnicacidisexclusivelyrestrictedtolichens,inafewunconfirmedisolatedcasesthecompoundwasfoundinkombuchateaandnon-lichenizedascomycetes.[4][5]
Atnormalconditions,usnicacidisabitter,yellow,solidsubstance.[1]Itisknowntooccurinnatureinboththed-andl-formsaswellasaracemicmixture.Saltsofusnicacidarecalledusnates(e.g.copperusnate).
