EucommiaulmoidesisaspeciesofsmalltreenativetoChina.Itbelongstothemonotypicfamily,Eucommiaceae.Itisnearthreatenedinthewild,butiswidelycultivatedinChinaforitsbarkandishighlyvaluedinherbologysuchasTraditionalChinesemedicine.Eucommiaulmoidesgrowstoabout15mtall.Theleavesaredeciduous,arrangedalternately,simpleovatewithanacuminatetip,8–16cmlong,andwithaserratedmargin.Ifaleafistornacross,strandsoflatexexudedfromtheleafveinssolidifyintorubberandholdthetwopartsoftheleaftogether.ItflowersfromMarchtoMay.Theflowersareinconspicuous,smallandgreenish;thefruit,JunetoNovember,isawingedsamarawithoneseed,verysimilartoanelmsamarainappearance,2–3cmlongand1–2cmbroad.
