Safety Information
CAS Number: 7440-37-1.
Physical and Chemical Properties: Colorless and odorless inert gas. Slightly soluble in water. Melting point (℃): -189.2; Boiling point (℃): -185.7; Relative density (water=1): 1.40 (-186℃); Relative density (air=1): 1.38; Saturation vapor pressure (kPa): 202.64 (-179℃); Flash point (℃): No data; Combustion heat (kJ/mol): 241; Critical temperature (℃): -122.3; Critical pressure (MPa): 4.86; Upper explosion limit (v%): Not applicable; Lower explosion limit (v%): Not applicable; Ignition temperature (℃): Not applicable.
Combustion and Explosion Hazards: Non-flammable. Under high heat, the pressure inside the container may increase, posing a risk of rupture and explosion.
Firefighting Methods: Non-flammable, asphyxiating. Remove containers from the fire area if possible. Spray water to keep the containers cool until the fire is out. Evacuate people to the upwind side and isolate the contaminated area. Emergency personnel should wear self-contained positive pressure breathing apparatus and general work clothes. Cut off the leak source if possible. Ensure adequate ventilation to disperse the gas. Handle the leaking container properly, repair and inspect before reuse.
Health Hazards: Non-toxic under normal pressure. High concentrations can cause asphyxiation by reducing oxygen partial pressure. Argon concentrations above 50% can cause severe symptoms; concentrations above 75% can be fatal within minutes. Symptoms include increased breathing rate, lack of concentration, ataxia, followed by fatigue, restlessness, nausea, vomiting, coma, convulsions, and potentially death. Liquid argon can cause frostbite; eye contact can cause inflammation.
First Aid Measures: Skin contact: Seek medical treatment if frostbite occurs. Eye contact: Lift the eyelid and flush with running water or saline for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention. Inhalation: Quickly move to a fresh air area. Keep the airway clear. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If breathing stops, perform artificial respiration immediately. If breathing and heartbeat stop, perform artificial respiration and external chest compressions immediately.
