Nisin supplements (available as lozenges or oral sprays) support oral health by:
Inhibiting oral pathogens: Nisin disrupts the cell membranes of S. mutans and P. gingivalis, preventing their attachment to tooth enamel and gum tissue. A 2021 clinical trial involving 120 adults with early-stage dental caries found that daily use of nisin lozenges (400 IU/lozenge) reduced S. mutans levels in saliva by 50% after 8 weeks, compared to a placebo group.
Reducing biofilm formation: Harmful oral bacteria form biofilms (dental plaque) that protect them from antibiotics and saliva. Nisin inhibits biofilm formation by preventing bacterial aggregation; in vitro studies show it reduces S. mutans biofilm mass by 60–70%, making it a promising adjunct to traditional oral hygiene (brushing, flossing).
