Folic acid is one of the B vitamins and is also known as vitamin B9. It is found in various forms in common foods, especially green, leafy vegetables.

Folate is the general term used to refer to any of the protein-bound or other conjugated forms of folic acid, which are forms generally found in foods.
The body readily absorbs up to 90 percent of folic acid (the form found in supplements). Folate or protein-bound folic acid compounds cannot be absorbed until they are modified by enzymes in the body. As little as 50 percent of folate can be absorbed. Folic deficiency results in megaloblastic anemia.
