Braille is a way of representing text with a series of raised dots allowing blind people to read with their fingers. The six dots that make up Braille translate into letters of the alphabet, numbers, symbols and common words. Braille is a coding system that is used by blind and visually impaired people in all languages.

It’s a tactile way of reading and writing and is particularly important for public places and buildings. The sharp contrasting and prominent tactile letters allow partially sighted people to visualise signs much easier.

Grade 1 Braille which represents letter for letter and is used for single and shorter wording signs and also grade 2 which is an abbreviated form, this is used for longer sentenced signs and notices.

People who are blind or visually impaired benefit from braille signs that are placed in convenient and predictable locations. In addition, the braille should be presented horizontally and clear of the sign's edge, unobscured by the frame.

An additional benefit is that, when incorporated in signage, Braille helps protect the rights of blind and visually impaired individuals in public places.Along with ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), adding Braille elements to signage allows blind and visually impaired individuals to easily navigate buildings.

In the absence of the ability to see and read written information, braille allows you read through touch. Braille opens the door to equal opportunity and independence by allowing those who are blind or visually impaired to take in often important information from plaques and signs.
