How to clean your DJ gear?

Dust is unavoidable. Fabric fibres, pollen, animal dander, even you, all contribute to the diverse materials forming the substance. We know it as unpleasant particles tormenting our DJ gear. With enough build-up, alongside its loyal friend dirt, dust starts to affect the functionality of different components, leading to rigid faders and a host of other problems, not to mention a reduction in aesthetics.

Prevention is your best bet: use a Decksaver or dust cover when not practising, travel with , elevate equipment while playing, wash your hands, be diligent about liquids.

Regular maintenance, such as using compressed air and a microfibre cloth, helps immensely. When operating compressed air, make sure to get each side of the fader slot, directing it away from the fader carriage, as this will allow dust to escape.

The manufacturer-set lubrication for equipment is a delicate balance; dust sticks to oily surfaces but falls away from dry ones, so limiting usage to only what the gear requires will serve you well.

I am almost afraid to say … , flight case,of course. Any other dust prohibiting actions? None, moist reduction (like Silica gel)? Nope. DJ gear in is a lot more resilient than you think.

While bigger, heavier and usually the reason for other transportation, flight cases are, imho, far superior to any kind of soft case with or without deck protector.

If stuff really needs a good cleaning, I use an industrial anti-static foam cleaner. Works wonders, easy to use and looks like new when you are done with it.

Speakers and such sit with (soft) covers but no extra protection.Stands in bags, lights in crates.

Not saying to follow my lead, but don’t be too panicky about it.

If you have bought high quality gear, this stuff was made for the road and is ready to endure that life, which comes with dust, shocks, moisture and a few other hazards.
