The gut microbiota plays a critical role in nutrient absorption, immune regulation, and GI barrier function. Dysbiosis (imbalance of gut microbes, e.g., overgrowth of harmful bacteria) is linked to conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and bacterial gastroenteritis. Nisin supports gut health by:
- Targeting pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria: Nisin exerts strong antimicrobial activity against harmful Gram-positive pathogens that colonize the gut, such asClostridium difficile(a leading cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea),Staphylococcus aureus(linked to foodborne GI infections), andListeria monocytogenes(a common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis).
