ThepeonyisafloweringplantinthegenusPaeonia,theonlygenusinthefamilyPaeoniaceae.TheyarenativetoAsia,SouthernEuropeandWesternNorthAmerica.Boundariesbetweenspeciesarenotclearandestimatesofthenumberofspeciesrangefrom25[2]to40.[3]
Mostareherbaceousperennialplants0.5–1.5metres(1.6–4.9ft)tall,butsomeresembletrees1.5–3metres(4.9–9.8ft)tall.Theyhavecompound,deeplylobedleavesandlarge,oftenfragrant,flowers,rangingfromredtowhiteoryellow,inlatespringandearlysummer.
ThepeonyisnamedafterPaeon(alsospelledPaean),astudentofAsclepius,theGreekgodofmedicineandhealing.Asclepiusbecamejealousofhispupil;ZeussavedPaeonfromthewrathofAsclepiusbyturninghimintothepeonyflower.[4]
Thefamilyname"Paeoniaceae"wasfirstusedbyFriedrichK.L.Rudolphiin1830,followingasuggestionbyFriedrichGottliebBartlingthatsameyear.[2]Thefamilyhadbeengivenothernamesafewyearsearlier.[5]Thecompositionofthefamilyhasvaried,butithasalwaysconsistedofPaeoniaandoneormoregenerathatarenowplacedinRanunculales.[3]IthasbeenwidelybelievedthatPaeoniaisclosesttoGlaucidium,andthisideahasbeenfollowedinsomerecentworks.[2][6]Molecularphylogeneticstudies,however,havedemonstratedconclusivelythatGlaucidiumbelongsinRanunculaceae,[7]butthatPaeoniabelongsintheunrelatedorderSaxifragales.
