Applications
Recommended for industrial use, can be used to manufacture high-purity boron, catalysts for organic synthesis, fluxing agents for the decomposition of silicates, boronizing of steel, doping sources for semiconductors, oxygen removal agents in alloy refining, additives for nitrides and carbides. It can also be used to manufacture boron nitride and borane compounds.
Physical and Chemical Properties
CAS Number: 10294-34-5.
Physical and Chemical Characteristics: Colorless, fuming liquid or gas with a strong odor, hygroscopic. Soluble in benzene, carbon disulfide. Melting point (℃): -107.3; Boiling point (℃): 12.5; Relative density (water=1): 1.43; Relative density (air=1): 4.03; Saturation vapor pressure (kPa): 101.32 (12.5℃); Flash point (℃): Not applicable; Combustion heat (kJ/mol): Not applicable; Critical temperature (℃): No data; Critical pressure (MPa): No data; Upper and Lower Explosion Limits (v%): Not applicable; Ignition temperature (℃): Not applicable.
Combustion and Explosion Hazards: Non-flammable, highly corrosive and irritating, can cause burns. Highly reactive in chemical reactions, explosively decomposes upon contact with water. Can form explosive chloroacetylene with copper and its alloys. Highly corrosive to most metals and can also corrode glass upon contact with moisture. Can form a white corrosive dense smoke in humid air.
Firefighting Methods: Non-flammable. Cut off the gas supply. Spray water to cool the container, and if possible, remove the container from the fire area to an open space. Fire extinguishing agents: sand and earth. Do not use water or foam extinguishers.
Health Hazards: Harmful by inhalation, ingestion, or skin absorption. Can cause chemical burns. Strongly corrosive to eyes, skin, mucous membranes, and upper respiratory tract. Inhalation can lead to death due to spasm, edema of the larynx and bronchi, chemical pneumonia, and pulmonary edema. Symptoms of poisoning include a burning sensation, cough, wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breath, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Chronic effects: Neurotoxic.
First Aid Measures: Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing, rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention. Eye contact: Lift the eyelid and rinse with plenty of water or saline for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention. Inhalation: Quickly move to a fresh air area. Keep the airway clear. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If breathing stops, perform artificial respiration immediately. If breathing and heartbeat stop, perform artificial respiration and external chest compressions immediately. Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water, drink milk or egg whites. Seek medical attention.
