Thermal and Storage Stability ofCystine Disodium Salt
- Thermal stability: Cystine Disodium Salt is stable under moderate heating (≤ 100 °C) in neutral aqueous solutions, but it decomposes when heated to temperatures above 220 °C. The decomposition process involves two steps: first, the cleavage of the disulfide bond to produce sodium cysteinate, and second, the pyrolysis of amino and carboxylate groups to generate ammonia, carbon dioxide, and sulfur-containing volatile substances.
- Storage stability: It is stable when stored in a sealed, dry, and light-protected container at room temperature. However, it is susceptible to degradation by three factors: (1) high humidity, which causes hygroscopic agglomeration and partial hydrolysis; (2) strong light, which accelerates the oxidation of the disulfide bond; (3) trace metal ions, which catalyze redox reactions. Therefore, long-term storage requires the addition of antioxidants (e.g., sodium ascorbate) and metal chelators in the formulation.
