Thermosetting hammertone finish powder coatings, also known as artistic powder coatings, produce a surface pattern resembling hammered metal. This hammered effect isn’t achieved through physical striking but rather through a sophisticated “dance of chemistry and physics.” Its core lies in the addition of two key additives: hammer finish agents and degassing agents. The hammer finish agent is the soul of the pattern formation. It is a substance with extremely low surface tension, typically a modified silicone oil or acrylic polymer. During the heating and curing stage, powder particles melt into a liquid film. The hammering agent floating on the surface reduces the surface tension of the surrounding coating liquid, while other areas maintain higher surface tension. Liquids invariably flow from low-tension to high-tension zones. This “Marangoni effect” drives convective mass transfer within the molten coating, ultimately curing into a hammered pattern with a concave center and raised edges. During curing, the degassing agent facilitates the smooth escape of gases generated during powder melting, preventing pinholes while aiding hammer pattern development.
