Oral Drugs for Male Erectile Dysfunction
Sildenafil, an oral drug for erectile dysfunction in men, was developed by Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company in the United States as a 5-phosphate diesterase inhibitor for cardiovascular disease. It was discovered by accident that sildenafil improved the sexual life of patients with erectile dysfunction. In March 1998, the prescription drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States for the treatment of male erectile dysfunction became the first oral drug specially used for the treatment of male erectile dysfunction.
Common adverse reactions include headache, dizziness, flushing, dyspepsia, nasal obstruction, and visual abnormalities, which may be manifested as abnormal blue/green color discrimination, enhanced light sensitivity or blurred vision.
Severe adverse reactions include decreased blood pressure and cardiac output in recumbent position. In addition, clinical studies have shown that after taking sildenafil, sexual behavior increases the risk of cardiac abnormalities, which include angina, dizziness, nausea and other symptoms, and may lead to sudden cardiac death.
