OVERVIEW OF TINPLATE

Tinplate is a cold-rolled, low-carbon steel product that is coated with a thin layer of tin metal on both sides. This unique combination provides both the strength of steel and the corrosion resistance and weldability of tin. The most common application of tinplate is for making tin cans and other tin containers for food, beverages, and general packaging. The tin coating prevents the steel from corroding and tainting the contents inside. Tinplate is ideal for cans and containers due to it being lightweight yet strong, as well as being non-toxic and impermeable to air and liquids.

Beyond cans and containers, tinplate is also used for making bottle caps, electrical components, appliance parts, signs, and various other products where a thin, ductile, corrosion-resistant steel is needed. The tinplate can be stamped, drawn, spun, or otherwise fabricated into a variety of shapes while maintaining the integrity of the tin coating. Tinplate combines the desirable properties of two metals – tin plated steelprovides the underlying strength and formability, while the tin coating offers corrosion resistance and weldability.
