Measuring Principle
Thestress inside plastic products has a birefringent characteristic. In other words, if there is stress inside of these types of products, lightfrom he polarized lamp will be divided into different units, which produce optical interference phenomenon(ripple patterns) in turn.
When inspecting apreform under polarized light, the stripes ( patterns ) caused by molecular orientational strainbecomesvisible.
These patterns are anexcellent indication of preform qualitywhen considered along with other defects which are more clearly under polarized light.
A well-made preformwill displayorderly stress patterns, whileirregular stress patternsindicate a poorly made perform. To ensure an evenconsistent material distribution throughout the bottle walls during blowing process, it is important to use a well-made perform.
Defects such ascrystallization are usuallyinvisibleundernaturallight source, buttheycan bemuchclearwhenobserving under polarized light.
When placing a preform on a strain viewer, theangle at which the preform is placed relative to the polarization axis is very important.
