In the late 1990s, William Fairbank, a professor at the University of California at Riverside, and Walter K. Boyd, founder of MacroAir Technologies, invented and patented a new type of circulating fan, first called a High-Volume, Large-Diameter (HVLD) fan.
The world's first was invented in 1998. The University of California - Riverside(UCR) needed a solution to efficiently cool dairy cattle in the hot summer moths. Walter and Eddie came up with a large fan cooling solution. It is a new type of cooling and circulating fan--the world’s first HVLS Fan. This type of fan was originally developed for agricultural applications, so early research focused on the benefits of HVLS fans on dairy production.
