Ferromanganese is mainly an alloy composed of two elements, manganese and iron. Ferromanganese is a deoxidizer and alloying material most used in steelmaking production. It is made from manganese ore, which is smelted in blast furnaces and electric furnaces. The density of manganese is 7.43 grams per cubic centimeter, the melting point is 1245°C, and the boiling point is 2150°C. Manganese has a great affinity for oxygen and can form stable manganese oxide with oxygen. In addition, as an alloying element additive, ferromanganese can enhance the hardness, ductility, toughness and wear resistance of steel. It is widely used in structural steel, tool steel, stainless heat-resistant steel, wear-resistant steel and other alloy steels. Manganese also desulfurizes and reduces the harmful effects of sulfur. Medium and low carbon ferromanganese can be divided into low carbon ferromanganese with carbon content less than 0.7% and medium carbon ferromanganese with carbon content of 0.7%-2.0%.
Ferromanganese is divided into 3 categories according to its carbon content:
Low carbon: carbon not more than 0.7%;
Medium carbon: carbon not more than 0.7%~2.0%;
High carbon: carbon not more than 2.0%~8.0%.
