It forms a continuous, dense coating that effectively blocks the penetration of moisture and oils. Its low permeability and high adhesion ensure the coating remains intact and resistant to flaking or peeling, thereby providing enduring protection across diverse substrates.

In the packaging sector, microcrystalline wax is extensively employed for wax coating paper and cardboard. For instance, coating packaging paper with microcrystalline wax significantly enhances moisture resistance and oil repellency. This makes it suitable for applications such as frozen food cardstock and corrugated boxboard, preventing contents from becoming damp or oil-permeated. In food packaging, it is also employed in milk cartons, meat coatings, and bread wrapping paper, serving to isolate against moisture and oil penetration.
