Coolant Temperature Sensors

The coolant temperature sensor, with its slender head in contact with the coolant, is installed in the coolant jacket or pipeline of the engine block. Its interior is equipped with a thermistor with a negative temperature coefficient. When the engine coolant temperature increases gradually, the resistance value of the thermistor will gradually decrease, on the contrary, it will increase. As a result, when the engine coolant temperature changes, the output voltage of this sensor will also change accordingly. After receiving the signal from the coolant temperature sensor, the ECU corrects the injection time and ignition time of the engine.

What Are the Symptoms of a Bad Coolant Temperature Sensors ?

Low Temperature

Under cold conditions, the engine is difficult to start, the idle speed is unstable, and the power is insufficient during acceleration. The reason is that when the engine ECI cannot receive the normal signal from the coolant temperature sensor, will perform the safety insurance function in order to maintain the engine running. At this moment, ECI draws the substitute value of coolant temperature (80 ~ 90 ℃) stored in the memory as the coolant temperature value. Therefore, when the engine is cold, there is a lack of increase related to low engine temperature in the fuel injection quantity controlled by ECI, so that the mixture is thin, cause trouble starting and other faults.

Engine Malfunction

Under the condition of hot engine, the power is normal when the engine starts, idles and accelerates. However, the engine fault indicator is always on and the electric fan does not work.

Open or Short Circuit Fault

In case of open or short circuit fault, the electronic fan will rotate at high speed.
