In 2019, the demand for needle coke in the Chinese market continued to increase substantially, with an estimated 780,000 tons, an increase of about 36%.
The demand for needle coke in the graphite electrode market is mainly due to the increase in the total output of graphite electrodes. In 2019, the total output of graphite electrodes in China is expected to reach 1.337 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 39%, especially in the 2019 Chinese market UHP 600mm. The output and export volume of electrodes have increased greatly. The number of manufacturers with UHP 700mm is expected to be over 13. 2020 is the year of centralized capacity replacement of Chinese steel mills. The newly added electric furnace steel capacity is expected to increase by 10 million tons compared with the increase in 2019. The total capacity is expected to reach 194 million tons, which will bring China's graphite electrode market. New opportunities, the demand for high-quality needle coke will also increase.
In terms of anode materials, the output of lithium battery anode materials in China was 257,500 tons in 2018, and the purchase volume of needle coke was 220,000 tons. In 2019, China's anode materials continued to maintain rapid growth. According to ICCSINO statistics, the output of enterprises in Jan to Jun was 137,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 45%. Not only is the demand in the domestic market strong, but the export is also remarkable. It is expected that the annual export growth will exceed 60%. Stimulated by the global new energy vehicle market, China's anode material production is expected to reach 650,000 tons by 2021.
With increasing demand, the design capacity of needle coke in the Chinese market is also very large. According to ICCSINO, the needle coke capacity in China will reach 970,000 tons in 2019, and it will be as high as 2.01 million tons in 2020. The capacity of coal-based needle coke is relatively large.
