Cystine Disodium Salt
The most prominent advantage of Cystine Disodium Salt is its excellent water solubility, a property that addresses the critical limitation of free L-cystine (which has a solubility of only ~0.1 g/L at 25 °C).
- At room temperature, its solubility in water reaches 100–120 g/L, and this value rises to 150–180 g/L at 80 °C. This high solubility enables the preparation of high-concentration aqueous solutions, which is essential for formulating oral liquids, injectable preparations, and nutritional supplements that require precise dosing of cystine.
- Unlike free L-cystine, which precipitates easily in acidic conditions, Cystine Disodium Salt remains soluble in neutral to weakly alkaline media (pH 7.0–9.0). This stability avoids the problem of precipitation during storage or administration, ensuring the uniformity and bioavailability of the formulation.
- It is sparingly soluble in non-polar organic solvents, which simplifies the purification process: after synthesis, impurities can be removed by washing with organic solvents (e.g., ethanol, acetone) without causing product loss, thus improving the purity of the final product.
