- Moderate hygroscopicity and no deliquescence: Unlike some highly hygroscopic amino acid salts, Cystine Disodium Salt only absorbs moisture slightly in humid environments (relative humidity > 60%) and does not undergo deliquescence. This property ensures that it remains in a crystalline or granular state during storage, avoiding caking and maintaining a consistent particle size—an important factor for the preparation of solid dosage forms (e.g., tablets, capsules).
- Good thermal stability under moderate conditions: It is stable at temperatures up to 100 °C in neutral aqueous solutions, making it suitable for heat-processing steps such as pasteurization in the production of nutritional beverages. Although it decomposes above 220 °C, this decomposition temperature is much higher than the processing temperatures of most pharmaceutical and food products, minimizing degradation during manufacturing.
- Resistance to metal ion-catalyzed oxidation with chelation: Cystine Disodium Salt can form stable chelate complexes with transition metal ions (e.g., Cu²⁺, Fe³⁺) via its amino and carboxylate groups. This chelation not only prevents metal ions from catalyzing the oxidation of the disulfide bond but also enables its application in heavy metal detoxification therapy—where it binds to toxic metal ions and facilitates their excretion from the body.
