GBIC Transceiver
Eoptolinkgigabitinterfaceconverter(GBIC)isastandardfortransceivers,commonlyusedwithGigabitEthernetandfibrechannel.Byofferingastandard,hotswappableelectricalinterface,onegigabitethernetportcansupportawiderangeofphysicalmedia,fromcoppertolong-wavesingle-modeopticalfiber,atlengthsofhundredsofkilometers.TheappealoftheGBICstandardinnetworkingequipment,asopposedtofixedphysicalinterfaceconfigurations,isitsflexibility.Wheremultipledifferentopticaltechnologiesareinuse,anadministratorcanpurchaseGBICsasneeded,notinadvance,andtheycanbethespecifictypeneededforeachlink.Thislowersthecostofthebasesystemandgivestheadministratorfarmoreflexibility.Ontheotherhandifitisknownthataswitchwillmostlyhaveoneporttype(especiallyifthatporttypeiscopper)purchasingaswitchwiththatporttypebuiltinwillprobablybecheaperandtakeuplessspaceperport.TheGBICstandardisnon-proprietaryandisdefinedbytheSFFCommitteeindocument#SFF-8053.
