High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Film Bale, Rolls, Lumps, HDPE Scrap for Sale Supplier, Granules
HDPE, or High-Density Polyethylene, is one of the most versatile plastics, extensively used across various fields, especially packaging. Common applications include PE packaging, HDPE packaging, PE bags, HDPE bags, and plastic bottles.
Chemical Properties
HDPE is distinguished by its density, which ranges from 0.93 to 0.97 g/cm³ (or 930 to 970 kg/m³). Despite its density being only slightly higher than that of low-density polyethylene (LDPE), HDPE's lesser degree of branching results in stronger intermolecular forces and higher tensile strength.
This increased strength exceeds the density difference, giving HDPE a higher specific strength. It is also harder, more opaque, and can withstand slightly higher temperatures (up to 120°C/248°F for short periods). Unlike polypropylene, HDPE cannot withstand normal autoclaving conditions.
Most types of LDPE, MDPE, and HDPE have excellent chemical resistance, meaning they are not attacked by strong acids or bases and resist oxidants and light-reducing agents. HDPE crystals are insoluble at room temperature but can be dissolved at high temperatures in aromatic hydrocarbons like toluene or xylene, or in chlorinated solvents such as trichloroethane or trichlorobenzene.
Why HDPE is Popular
Lightweight and Durable: A 2-ounce HDPE milk bottle can contain a gallon of milk, and many car manufacturers use HDPE for fuel tanks to improve fuel efficiency.
Impact Resistance: HDPE withstands bumps and impacts.
Durable and Weather-Resistant: It is durable, weather-resistant, and can resist mold, mildew, rot, and insects, making it ideal for underground pipes used for water distribution.
Moldability: HDPE can be easily molded into almost any shape, providing the toughness characteristic of most plastics.
Environmental Benefits
HDPE often replaces heavier materials, supporting sustainability goals by reducing the amount of materials used in packaging and production. Studies have shown that plastic packaging can provide more food with less waste, use less energy, and result in lower global warming potential compared to alternative methods.
Applications
Packaging: Containers for milk or juice, caps for food jars, chemical containers, and industrial tanks.
Household Products: Trash bins and children's furniture.
Automotive Industry: Fuel tanks.
Fiber and Fabric Industry: Ropes, fish nets, agricultural cover nets, decorative and industrial fabrics, woven fabrics, and fruit and vegetable packaging nets.
