GP VS HC Container
General Purpose (GP) and High Cube (HC) shipping containers are the two main dry standard shipping containers on the market today. GP dry containers are the standard size that are 259.08cm (8’6’’) high on the outside and have an internal height of 238.44cm (7’10’’).
HC dry containers are 289.56cm (9’6’’) high on the outside with an internal height of 269.24cm (8’10’’). That’s just 30cm (1 ft) of extra height but it significantly increases the volume relative to the GP container space. There are more GPs than HCs in the 20ft market and more HCs than GPs in the 40ft market. It’s all based on exporter/importer preference when it comes down to it.
