As the most common LSZH Cable, XLPE wirerefers to cables where the cable jacketing and insulation is made with materials that produce low and or limited smoke and non-toxic halogens when exposed to fire or high temperatures.
Where fire safety is paramount and tight spaces are unavoidable, xlpe power cableis utilized. Due to a series of fires in transportation facilities and other sites, XLPE cables came about as a solution to these problems. Thanks to the low smoke factor, visibility is maintained which in turn can significantly decrease respiratory damage in these emergency fire situations. On top of this, the generation of toxic and halogenated gas is greatly reduced making it even safer than it already is.
XLPE Cable temperature rating is 150℃. Compare to Thermoplastic material (like PVC, TPE, PE ), XLPE insulation will not melt exposure to high temperatures. The insulation melting will cause an electrical fire which is very dangerous.
XLPE insulation performs at both high and low temperatures. Due to its structure, XLPE is extremely resistant to abrasion and other wear and tear. XLPE insulated cable also boasts resistance to high voltage electricity, chemicals, and other hazardous materials. Cross-linked polyethylene insulation is also a more affordable option. Why XLPE (LSZH)?
XLPE is the most common Low Smoke Zero Halogen Material (LSZH). XLPE stands for Cross-Linked Polyethylene and is derived from Polyethylene (PE). Polyethylene (PE) material itself has limited in its temperature range. However, cross-linking the PE to become XLPE greatly improves the temperature range of the insulation whilst maintaining the electrical properties.
Most of the casualties from fire incidents are not actually directly caused by the fire itself. It is often caused by the inhalation of noxious gases produced by the burning of some materials. It is in these highly critical situations where Low Smoke Zero Halogen or LSZH cables come in handy. In fact, the subsequent development of LSZH cable was in direct response to such unfortunate incidents. Because it’s purpose and development is highly specified, its performance for its intended purpose is simply outstanding. LSZH cable, as its name implies, generates a minute amount of smoke when exposed to fire. Also, it emits zero halogenated gases. It is these characteristics that make LSZH cable very valuable, as it helps maintain visibility in case of fire. This in turn allows people to escape the burning building with very low risk of toxic smoke inhalation.
