DL-Methionine has multiple coordination sites (amino nitrogen, carboxylate oxygen, and sulfur atom in the methylthio group), enabling it to form stable complexes with a variety of metal ions. Complexation with transition metal ions: It can form stable chelate complexes with transition metal ions such asCu^2+,Zn^2+,Fe^2+, andMn^2+. The coordination mode is primarily bidentate, with the amino nitrogen and carboxylate oxygen acting as the main coordination sites, while the methylthio sulfur atom serves as an auxiliary coordination site to enhance the stability of the complex. For example, the complex formed between DL-methionine andZn^2+has a stability constant (logK) of approximately 5.8, which is widely used in the preparation of zinc supplements with high bioavailability. Complexation with heavy metal ions: DL-Methionine can form insoluble complexes with toxic heavy metal ions such asPb^2+,Cd^2+, andHg^2+. The sulfur atom in the methylthio group plays a dominant role in this complexation, as it has a high affinity for heavy metal ions. This property makes DL-methionine a potential agent for heavy metal detoxification and wastewater treatment. Enantiomer-specific complexation: Although DL-methionine is a racemic mixture, L-methionine and D-methionine exhibit different complexation behaviors with chiral metal complexes. This difference is the basis for chiral resolution of DL-methionine into its individual enantiomers via chiral complexation chromatography.
