Portal Crane

Product Introduction

A Portal Crane is a rail-mounted slewing jib crane designed for material handling and heavy lifting in ports, docks, shipyards, and waterfront industrial facilities. Its upper slewing and lifting mechanisms are mounted on a portal-type supporting structure, leaving an open passage beneath the portal for transport vehicles and other equipment to move through.

The crane can travel longitudinally along dockside rails, while its boom and slewing mechanism enable it to cover a wide working area. Depending on the configuration, it can handle general cargo, heavy steel structures, ship components, and other materials used in port operations.

Chunhua’s 45T Portal Crane is a customized lifting solution manufactured for a national-level port group. Designed for demanding port handling conditions, it offers a wide operating coverage and stable performance for cargo loading, unloading, and transfer operations. Its configuration can be tailored to the intended handling tasks and site requirements.

Key Features

  • Wide Working Coverage: Rail travel, boom luffing, and upper-structure slewing work together to extend the crane’s operating range and serve different vessel berthing positions.
  • Portal Structure for Vehicle Passage: The open space beneath the portal allows suitable container transport vehicles, flatbed trailers, and cargo vehicles to pass through, improving site utilization.
  • Heavy-Duty Structural Design: The portal structure and boom are engineered to withstand the loads and operating conditions specified for the project. Structural strength and stability must be verified through appropriate engineering calculations.
  • Designed for Repetitive Port Operations: Hoisting, slewing, travelling, and other mechanisms can be configured for the required operating duty and cargo-handling cycle.
  • Precise Lifting and Positioning: Independent or coordinated control of the available mechanisms supports controlled load movement and accurate positioning during handling operations.
  • Outdoor Operating Adaptability: Electrical protection, corrosion protection, and other environmental measures can be specified according to exposure to moisture, rain, wind, and other site conditions.
  • Versatile Cargo Handling: Depending on the crane design and approved lifting configuration, compatible attachments such as grabs, electromagnetic lifting devices, or container spreaders may be used for different material-handling tasks.

Working Principle

A Portal Crane combines rail-mounted travel, hoisting, boom movement, and slewing to perform cargo-handling operations within its designed working envelope.

The travelling mechanism moves the entire crane longitudinally along the dockside rails. The hoisting mechanism raises or lowers the load through a wire-rope and lifting-device arrangement. Where a luffing mechanism is provided, changing the boom angle adjusts the working radius. The slewing mechanism rotates the upper crane assembly to position the load within the permitted operating area.

These mechanisms can be operated independently or in coordinated movements, depending on the crane’s control system and operating requirements. Suitable lifting attachments may be fitted for different cargo types, provided they are compatible with the crane’s rated capacity, lifting system, and approved operating configuration.

During operation, the crane must remain within its specified load chart, operating limits, and environmental restrictions.

Applications

Portal cranes are widely used in ports and waterfront industrial facilities where cargo handling, heavy lifting, and efficient use of dockside space are essential.

  • Port and Dock Cargo Handling: Loading, unloading, and transferring cargo between vessels, dockside areas, and transport vehicles.
  • Shipyards: Lifting and positioning ship components, steel structures, and other heavy assemblies.
  • Steel and Heavy Component Handling: Handling steel sections, large fabricated structures, and industrial components.
  • Bulk Material Handling: Moving suitable bulk materials using compatible grab attachments.
  • Container Handling: Handling containers when equipped with a compatible container spreader and an appropriate rated lifting configuration.
  • Specialized Waterfront Projects: Supporting customized lifting and material-handling operations according to site layout and project requirements.

OEM & Customization

Chunhua provides customized portal crane solutions for port operators and industrial customers with specialized lifting requirements. The crane configuration can be evaluated according to rated lifting capacity, working radius, lifting height, rail gauge, boom arrangement, operating duty, cargo type, and site conditions.

Customization may include hoisting and slewing mechanisms, rail-travelling systems, control arrangements, compatible lifting attachments, and environmental protection measures. Options must be confirmed through technical evaluation to ensure compatibility with the intended loads and operating conditions.

For a project-specific proposal, customers are encouraged to provide the required lifting capacity, vessel or cargo information, dock layout, rail arrangement, required working coverage, and expected operating frequency.

FAQ

1. What is a portal crane used for?

A portal crane is primarily used for cargo handling and heavy lifting in ports, docks, shipyards, and waterfront industrial facilities. Typical tasks include loading, unloading, transferring cargo, and positioning large steel structures or ship components.

2. What is the lifting capacity of Chunhua’s 45T Portal Crane?

The 45T Portal Crane has a stated lifting capacity of 45 tonnes. Its allowable lifting load at a particular working radius must be confirmed using the approved load chart and technical documentation.

3. How does a portal crane achieve a wide working coverage?

Its rail-mounted travelling mechanism moves the crane along the dock, while the slewing mechanism rotates the upper assembly. Where a luffing mechanism is provided, boom-angle adjustment changes the working radius. Together, these movements expand the crane’s operating coverage within its design limits.

4. Can a portal crane handle different types of cargo?

Yes, a suitably configured portal crane can handle different cargo types using compatible lifting attachments, such as hooks, grabs, electromagnetic lifting devices, or container spreaders. Each attachment and lifting configuration must be approved for the intended load and operating conditions.

5. Can a portal crane be customized for a specific port?

Yes. Portal cranes can be customized according to the port layout, rail gauge, required lifting capacity, working radius, cargo types, operating duty, and environmental conditions. Final specifications should be determined through project-specific engineering and technical review.
