Bis-Tris is a very versatile zwitterionic biological buffer commonly used in biological and biochemical research. Bis-Tris is named according to its structure. Unlike most other available biological buffers, Bis-Tris' has functional groups associated with two distinct structural families: the bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amine family and the Tris family.

Bis-Tris full name is bis (2-hydroxyethyl) amino (trimethylol) methane, CAS number: 6976-37-0, is an inert zwitterionic buffer, the effective pH buffer range is 5.8-7.2, pKa =6.5 (25°C), the structure is similar to Tris, hence the name. Bis-Tris has only a slight change in its dissociation constant with the change of temperature. It can ionize a small amount of hydrogen ions and is weakly acidic, so it is suitable for weakly acidic buffer systems.

Advantages of Using Bis-tris Gels for Protein Electrophoresis:
The gel runs at neutral pH, which minimizes protein denaturation and helps improve protein stability during electrophoresis, which in turn helps to improve band clarity and resolution;

The electrophoresis time is about 40% shorter than that of standard Tris-glycine;

The casted gel can be stored at 4°C for up to 4 weeks and is compatible with standard staining and transfer methods;

Premixed acrylamide buffer improves reproducibility while saving time;

Flexibility: Dilute the separation solution with deionized water to make its gel percentage reach any value between 8% and 15%;

The rapid glue making solution supports the simultaneous polymerization of lamination glue and separation glue, which can further save time.
