Filter Press

are used in a variety of industries for solid-liquid separation and consist of a series of stacked filter plates or frames, alternating with filter cloths, which when screwed together form a series of chambers. Under pressure, the liquid is forced through the filter cloth, leaving a solid residue or cake on the surface of the cloth. The process efficiently dewater slurries, clarify liquids and recover valuable solids from the process stream. Filter presses are known for handling large quantities of material, high levels of solids recovery and minimal operating costs, making them indispensable tools in mining, chemical processing, food and beverage production, wastewater treatment and many other industrial applications.

Principle of operation of a filter press

The consists of a support structure that holds a series of concave plates lined with filter cloth. Hydraulic pressure is used to hold the concave plates tightly together, thus creating a seal around their perimeter and the void space between the plates. A high pressure slurry pump presses the slurry into the cavity between the plates for dewatering. Mud solids are captured between the plates, while clean filtrate water passes through the filter fabric mesh and out the ports in the plates. When the chamber space is filled with dewatered slurry solids, the slurry feed pump automatically stops. The hydraulic pressure holding the plates together is released so that the plates can be separated individually, allowing the cake of dewatered solids material to fall from the filter press by gravity.

The plates are hydraulically connected to form a seal while the feed pump provides the necessary pressure to dewater the fine solids.

The filter press is designed for simple and limited movement. This design allows for a high level of automation and reliability. Compared to competing dewatering technologies, the filter press allows for higher levels of water removal because the dewatered material is captured between the concave plates at the highest possible pump pressure. Filter presses are also designed for specific applications to achieve optimum dewatering efficiency by selecting the cycle time, cake thickness, feed pressure and plate pattern.
