Introduction:

Blueberry extract is extracted from blueberry (Vaccinium uliginosumL.) which is rich of anthocyanidins. The bioactive principles contained in blueberry are various kind of anthocyanin(anthocyanidins, or phenolic aglycone, conjugated with sugar), chlorogenic acid, flavonids, α-linolenic acid, pterostilbene, resveratrol, and vitamins. After oral administration, anthocyanins can pass through blood-brain barrier and thus appear in various organs and brain. Improving visual function by increasing rhodopsin regeneration and ocular health is the earliest reported bioactivities of anthocyanin. Recent studies have demonstrated that the main function of blueberry extract is to prevent the age-related chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, obesity, and osteoporosis through its apoptosis, antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and anti-angiogenesis effects. Blueberry extract can eradicate microorganisms for the prevention of symptomatic urinary tract infections in women.
