What Is a Metal Fiber Pleated Filter Element?
A metal fiber pleated filter elementis a cylindrical filtration component constructed from layers of sintered metal fiber media — typically stainless steel — folded into a pleated configuration and sealed between end caps. The pleating increases the available filtration surface area within a fixed housing diameter, which directly reduces pressure drop and extends service intervals compared to flat disc or straight-tube designs.The metal fiber media itself consists of randomly oriented stainless steel fibers sintered together under controlled temperature and pressure, forming a three-dimensional depth filtration matrix. Unlike woven wire mesh, which filters primarily on the surface, sintered metal fiber captures particles throughout the depth of the media — achieving finer absolute ratings at lower differential pressure, with higher dirt-holding capacity before a backwash cycle is needed.This makes metal fiber pleated elements the preferred choice when:
Operating temperatures exceed the limit of polymer cartridges (typically above 80°C)Media is chemically aggressive — solvents, acids, polymer melts, or corrosive gasesThe process requires repeatable absolute filtration rather than nominal ratingsThe filter housing is sized for cartridge formats but the application demands metal media durability
