Ferric chloride, chemical formula FeCl3, is an inorganic compound, usually present as a brownish red solid. It is a compound of iron and chlorine, sometimes also called "iron trichloride". Ferric chloride is widely used as a water treatment agent, especially as a coagulant in purifying water supply systems. It is also used as a catalyst, an oxidant in dye production, pharmaceuticals, an etchant in the electronics industry, and in other industrial applications.
