Product Description:
Arimidex is a drug indicated in the treatment of breast cancer in post-menopausal women. It is used both in adjuvant therapy (i.e. following surgery) and in metastatic breast cancer.
Many breast cancers also contain aromatase; the importance of tumor-generated estrogens is uncertain. Treatment of breast cancer has included efforts to decrease estrogen levels by ovariectomy premenopausally and by use of anti-estrogens and progestational agents both pre- and post-menopausally, and these interventions lead to decreased tumor mass or delayed progression of tumor growth in some women.
Arimidex is a potent and selective non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor. It significantly lowers serum estradiol concentrations and has no detectable effect on formation of adrenal corticosteroids or aldosterone.
Application:
Arimidex (Anastrozole) is the Aromatase inhibitor of choice. Arimidex’s mechanism of action - blocking conversion of Aromatizable steroids to estrogen - is in contrast to the mechanism of action of anti-estrogens such as Clomiphene (Clomid) or Tamoxifen (Nolvadex), which block estrogen receptors in some tissues, and activate estrogen receptors in others.
The drug is appropriately used when using substantial amounts of aromatizing steroids, or when one is prone to Gynecomastia and using moderate amounts of such steroids. Arimidex does not have the side effects of Aminoglutethimide (Cytadren) and can achieve a high degree of estrogen blockade, much more than Cytadren. It is possible to reduce estrogen too much with Arimidex, and for this reason, blood tests, or less preferably salivary tests, should be taken after the first week of use to determine if the dosage is correct.
