Ring milling is a preferred methodology for rapidly reducing coarse mineral, ore and similar particulate to the degree of fineness required for laboratory analytical procedures. The resulting sample is homogeneous and repeatability is excellent. Each batch is processed on a one-at-a time basis in a sealed bowl to minimise the possibility of contamination from the outside or the loss of sample as dust. The largest batch that can be prepared in a ring mill however is only approximately 5kg. When a need is seen to prepare larger samples, they can be processed in a standard ring mill in smaller batches on this one-at-a-time basis and then be recombined.
