Process steps for wood powder coating applications follow:

Preconditioning:

The substrate is evenly heated in infra red(IR) and/or convection ovens to achieve required conductivity,and release gasses. Typically, the substrate surface temperature is equalized at 200-220° F before entering the spray booth,although some have had success at lower temperatures. Woodmoisture must remain equalized across the surface at about 4 to 6% or higher to maintain conductivity for powder adherance.Since heat evaporates moisture, careful controls on preheating are necessary.

Application:

After preheating, powder is typically applied electrostatically, in a booth. Corona or tribo spray systems are recommended.

Powder Recovery:

Recovery systems utilize cyclones or filtration to recover 95 to 99.9% of overspray, which can the reused as is.

Cure:

Thermosets are cured by IR and/or convection. UV powders are initially melt flowed by IR/convection, then cured with UV light. Time, temperature, and IR or UV settings and wavelength vary with film and substrate thickness, powder, and substrate size and shape.

Cooling:

After curing, parts cool in open air, or thermosets may cure in a forced air tunnel

Meeting the Challenges of Heat Sensitive Substrates

Some woods and wood products have sufficient and consistent moisture content to provide conductivity and can be coated directly. Wood parts that require sanding can be cleaned with compressed air to remove any surface contaminants. To enhance electrostatic attraction, wood can be pretreated with a spray solution that provides a conductive surface. The part is then preheated to a desired coating temperature, which partially melts the powder to flow out when it is applied and helps the powder adhere to the part. A uniform board surface temperature allows for high transfer efficiency and a consistent appearance. For powder application, an electrostatic charge is applied from the spray gun to deposit powder on the WBS surface. Powder materials can be either thermal cure products or UV-cured powders. Thermal cure powders rely on infrared ovens, convection ovens or hybrid ovens that combine infrared and convection heating. The thermal energy melts the powder so it will flow into a level film and eventually cure, or crosslink, into a finished film.

With specially formulated UV-curable powders the melt and flow can be separated from the curing process and requires minimal heat to cure the powder. After the parts enter an infrared or convection oven where the coating melts and flows for two to ten minutes, the board is exposed to ultraviolet light for just a few seconds for final curing and hardening of the finish. Then the parts cool naturally or in a cooling tunnel before they are unloaded from the coating line.

And, powder application is a one-step finishing process, not requiring successive coats or long drying times.
