What is a fabric expansion joint?

Fabric expansion joints usually have the function of compensating for pipe misalignment and pipe thermal growth in power plants and other piping systems. Fabric expansion joints can absorb more movement than metal expansion joints, and do not require spring load to absorb.

How do fabric expansion joints work?

Fabric expansion joints have two main components-fabric air seal and metal frame. The fabric air seal is a closed loop, like a belt, both edges of which are clamped on a metal frame, which in turn is connected to the end of the duct. As the air duct moves, the fabric belt deforms. The fabric material must do this, while sometimes being exposed to high temperature and/or corrosive media without tearing or leaking.
