Three types of resonators

Although there are many differences between the models of resonator guitars, for example, steel, brass, and wood body changes, and round neck or square neck models. The main difference between resonators and guitars and the one that has the greatest impact on the tone of the guitar is the configuration of the resonators in the guitar body. Although resonator guitars are generally considered to have brighter midranges and warmer bass, there is considerable variability between the three resonator models.

Biscuit resonator

The biscuit resonator is the simplest of the three main resonators. It is essentially an inverted, rotating metal cone with a small hardwood center called a "biscuit." The "biscuits" accommodate the bridge saddle, causing vibrations to be transmitted directly from the strings to the bridge, and then from one point to the guitar body through the "biscuits" cone. The sound waves respond to the main body of the instrument, due to the lack of better terminology, filtering more than the spider resonator cone, which inverts and directs the sound directly to the soundboard. Therefore, there is a greater bass response.

Spider resonator

Unlike the "biscuit" model, the spider-shaped resonator cone is inverted, and the wider opening of the resonator cone faces the sound hole. The main difference between "spider" and "biscuit" resonator designs is the spider web bridge mode. The electric bridge transfers the resonance directly to the center of the "cobweb", where it is then more evenly distributed to the outer radius of the resonator cone. The resonator cone is usually located in the soundwell and also contributes to the tone of the instrument. In most cases, spider resonators are more often found in wood guitars. This combination provides a warm tone with better sustain and note definition.

Three cones: 3 x 10 inch cone

The tricon resonator has a 3 x 10 inch cone connected by a metal T-shaped rod. The feature of this design is that there are two resonators on the bass and treble sides of the guitar body. They are between the biscuit and Spider styles, with a good balance between volume and sustain, and are very popular with skateboarders. Tri-cone resonators are often less common, because the construction of three cones is a more expensive process.

How does a resonator guitar makes a sound?

The internal working principle of the resonator guitar (this special configuration is a simplified version of the spider resonator cone model) is very different from the standard acoustic guitar.

Although the tone of a standard acoustic guitar relies heavily on the tone wood, the guitar is made of a resonator, and the guitar transmits vibration from the strings to the resonator or resonator (a metal cone located directly below the guitar soundboard). ) The bridge.

According to the configuration of the resonator cone, sound waves are directly transmitted upward through the soundboard or enter the body, and then exit through the soundboard and the sound holes on both sides of the neck.
