What is Cold Forming Aluminum Foil?
Cold forming aluminum foil is a high-barrier laminated material used in pharmaceutical packaging. It is composed of multiple layers of different films through a lamination process, with the core layer being O-temper (soft) aluminum foil. This structure provides excellent deep-drawing performance.
Structure of Cold Forming Aluminum Foil
A typical cold forming aluminum foil has three layers:
Nylon (OPA) layer: Outer layer, provides excellent ductility and abrasion resistance, protecting the aluminum foil core.
Aluminum (AL) layer: Middle layer, the core of the structure, offering nearly 100% barrier properties against water, oxygen, and light.
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) layer: Inner layer, directly contacts the medicine, providing good heat-sealing performance for blister sealing with PTP lidding foil.
Common Alloys for Cold Forming Aluminum Foil
8011 Alloy: The classic pharmaceutical grade. Even distribution of Fe and Si forms fine intermetallic compounds, ensuring smooth cold stamping to form PTP blisters (with forming depth up to 3–5mm) and special-shaped closures. It resists “necking fracture” even in thin-wall areas, covering more than 90% of pharmaceutical forming requirements.
8021 Alloy: Improved plasticity compared to 8011, more suitable for highly complex structures such as multi-cavity blisters and tearable-seal foils. After forming, rebound rate ≤2%, ensuring precise packaging dimensions.
8079 Alloy: Excellent performance in ultra-thin gauges. At 0.025mm thickness, it still maintains outstanding formability, suitable for micro-dose blister packs (e.g., mini capsules), helping reduce material waste and lower packaging costs.
