Whiskerreinforcementinvolvesstrengtheningahardceramicmatrixwithstrong,stiff,silicon carbidecrystals,commonlycalledwhiskers.Whenaredispersedintoamatrixoffine-grainedaluminumoxide,thewhiskersaddtensilestrengthandimprovethefracturetoughnessoftheceramicmatrix.
Whisker-reinforcedceramicsusesiliconcarbidewhiskers(SiCw)todramaticallyincreasetoughnessandenabletheuseofcoolant.Whisker-reinforcedceramicsareidealformachiningNi-basedalloys(e.g.Inconel),Co-basedsuperalloys(e.g.Stellite)andforroughinghardcastingsandhardenedsteel.
