Phospholipids
The main classification of phospholipids
Phospholipids can be classified into two major categories based on their different skeletons:
Glycerophospholipid
With glycerol as the framework, it is the main component of biological membranes. Common types include:
Phosphatidylcholine (PC, lecithin) : It exists in cell membranes and lipoproteins and participates in fat transport.
Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE, cerebral phospholipid) : It is abundant in neural tissue and the brain.
Phosphatidylserine (PS) : Participates in the process of cell signal transduction and apoptosis.
Phosphatidylinositol (PI) : It is related to intracellular signal transduction, such as calcium signaling.
Sphingolipid
With sphingosine as the backbone, it mainly exists in animal cell membranes (such as myelin sheaths of nerve cells), for example:
Sphingomyelin (SM) : Involved in the structural stability of cell membranes and cell recognition.
